What is Montessori?

Our Montessori Programs

designing with inscribed and concentric figures

Pleasant Valley Montessori School offers an authentic Montessori setting: a nurturing environment designed to respect the natural growth of children.

Maria Montessori, an Italian educator and Italy's first female physician, based her work on direct observation of children and created a program and materials that complement and follow the natural development of he child.

At Pleasant Valley Montessori the adult is a guide or director more than a teacher. In a Montessori setting, the role of the adult is to prepare the environment and offer activities or "work," as it is referred to, to the children. It is through their own work, exploration, and movement that children learn best.

Each Montessori environment is characterized by multi-age groupings. At Pleasant Valley Montessori these classes include:

Children's House for children ages 2 1/2 through 6 years

Elementary Class for children ages 6 through 12 years.
